Below are the Statements of Intent we’ve received from the candidates:

President:  Lisa Hanson

This is our family’s fifth year at Booksin. My son Charlie is in 5th Grade, Sarah is in 2nd Grade, and my daughter Kate is in 6th Grade at WGMS. We spent two wonderful years living in Berlin, Germany, and were happy to return to our amazing Booksin School this past fall. I am so excited about the possibility of serving on BESCA’s Executive Board. I will focus on working with the parents, teachers, administration, and students to continue building a strong Booksin community and making our school the best it can be.
At Booksin, I help in my children’s classrooms each year, serve as an ABC Cornerstone Reader each year, and volunteer as a Garden Parent and Library Parent. I have also led the “Go Green” Cornerstone team. While in Berlin, I was the PTA Volunteer Coordinator at our international school. At our preschool in San Jose, I served on the Board as the VP Finance and as the VP Community Development. I currently volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank, focusing on the intersection of hunger and education. Before starting a family, I worked in corporate finance and micro-lending, and even taught English as a Second Language in Japan. I have a Master’s in International Management from UC San Diego and a BA in Economics and International Studies from Emory University. I speak Spanish, French (rusty), and a little German (the kids are much better). Some people know me as the owner of the big brown Newfoundland dog (Ollie) who sits by the fence near Room C every morning.
I would be honored to serve as the President of BESCA.

VP of Communications:  Betty Mooney

Hi, I am so happy to be at Booksin with all 3 of my boys for the first time! I have a 5th grader – Victor, a 3rd grader – David, and Booksin’s newest addition in TK – Daniel. Over my 6 years as a Booksin parent, I have volunteered as Room Parent, Art Docent & Garden Parent. I’ve also worked on the WAT auction team for the past 3 Walkathons. This year I was proud to join the BESCA board as the VP of Comm and one of my goals is to connect Booksin parents more frequently with the happenings at Booksin. In my paid work life, I am the Owner/CFO of my family’s masonry company in Houston. I get to do most of my work from home and travel about once a month.  I love my work and I also love being able to contribute to our fantastic school community. Additionally, I currently volunteer at our church and a local support group called H.A.N.D; which is not the kind of group anyone wants to be a part of, but I am glad to be able to do a small part to offer comfort to parents who’ve suffered the loss of a baby. I am a Cuban immigrant and was blessed to come to this country when I was 2 yrs old. I speak Spanish fluently and most of my kids do too…I’ll let you figure our which ones ;o)  I grew up most of my life in Houston and graduated from The University of Texas with my BA in Political Science. We’ve lived in California for about 8 years and 5 of those have been in charming Willow Glen. I love this community and am asking for another opportunity to continue to work as the VP of Communications and continue the legacy off this fabulous elementary school.

VP of Community Events: Dawn Akeroyd 

This is our family’s second year at Booksin.  I have one daughter in 4th grade and another in 6th grade at WGMS.  This year being the VP of Community Events I have over seen several committees, worked closely with other BESCA officers and school administrators to schedule and facilitate fun and enjoyable events for the entire Booksin Elementary Community.

Prior to Booksin, I served on the Home and School club for several years in the Cambrian School District, as well as being an active Room Parent and helping on fundraisers.  Outside of school, I like to spend my time, giving back to the community,  as a member of the Junior League.  There I have served on a  number of committees  along with having a position on the Management Team.

It would be my pleasure to serve and continue with the position of VP of Community Events for the 2017-2018 school year.

VP of Volunteers: Tarin Christensen

My name is Tarin Christensen and my kids have attended Booksin for the past 4 years. My daughter, Cooper, is in 3rd grade and my daughter, Kenley, is in kindergarten. My son Hayes still has 2 years of preschool before he attends Booksin. I think Booksin is a great school and I love being a part of our school community. Every year, I’ve volunteered in the classrooms and this year I started as a Cornerstone Reader. While serving as the VP of Volunteers this year, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and get to know many of you and understand the inner workings of what makes our school awesome. I’d love to work in this position again and continue to help foster our incredible network of volunteers.

VP of Finance: Sunshine Benke

My name is Sunshine Benke and I will have my older boy, Camden, entering the 2nd grade at Booksin for the 2017-2018 school year, I also have a younger boy, Cohen, who will be hopefully joining his brother in the 2018-2019 school year.  I am a NY transplant, but have lived in the area for almost 10 years now.  I graduated college with a finance degree and worked at Merrill Lynch before leaving finance when I moved to the Bay Area. I have been a parent volunteer in Camden’s classroom once a week all three years of his schooling. And I’m involved in a parent participation preschool with my younger son where I will be class coordinator next year.  Being involved in my sons’ school is very important to me, and I know both my sons (for now), love that I am.

Secretary: Wendy Wenzel

I have been actively involved in volunteering for the past 8 years at Booksin. I now have a 7th grade teenager at Willow Glen Middle School and a 3rd grader at Booksin. I spent 15 years in high tech working Human Resources Management while simultaneously following my passion as a Real Estate Investor, which is where I spend most of my time now. I currently hold the BESCA Secretary position for 2016-2017 and I also participate in Booksin’s School Site Council as a BESCA representative. I look forward to the chance to serve in this position again for the next school year.

Treasurer: Don Granera

My name is Don Granera and my son Nicholas attends 1st grade at Booksin.  As a Booksin parent, I am extremely appreciative of what the school has to offer.  I have volunteered in my son’s classroom both last year and this year.  Last year, I was active in helping to raise funds through the escrip program.  This year, I helped a little with the Mileage Club and am also a Room Parent and a Cornerstone reader for my son’s class.  When I heard that there were no applicants for the Treasurer position, I offered to run for the position.  I would like to help to continue the good work that has been done by the existing board.
